A major figure in French chanson, he is particularly known for his poetically inspired songs exploring themes of travel, friendship, and brotherhood, as well as for his French adaptations of Bob Dylan’s songs, whom he met during his stay in New York in the early 1960s.
Over a career spanning more than sixty-five years, he recorded 39 albums, including 31 studio albums, as well as 75 singles. Among his best-known songs are Santiano, Stewball, Céline, Le Petit Âne gris, Hasta Luego et Adieu monsieur le professeur.
À la mort de Marcel Amont en mars 2023, il devient l’artiste masculin le plus âgé de la chanson française encore en activité.
