Nouvel album chez ECM : « Spindrift ».

Returning with a newly formed quintet, brought together during an especially fruitful session in 2024 in the south of France, German pianist Benjamin Lackner presents a different and exciting facet of his compositional approach. Trumpeter Mathias Eick is the only musician returning from Lackner’s first album, Last Decade, and can be heard in a striking interplay with Mark Turner’s idiosyncratic saxophone language, forming one of the key features of the musical dialogue that runs through Spindrift.

The brass duo and pianist are joined by the incomparable bassist Linda May Han Oh and French drummer Matthieu Chazarenc, who was part of Lackner’s trio before the pianist joined ECM. Subtle fanfares meet contemplative lyricism in a program of original compositions that always prioritize melody and ensemble chemistry. Saxophone and trumpet take the lead, forming their own mini-section, weaving intricate lines and delivering striking solos within a particularly harmonious group sound and a repertoire of melodic pieces.
