Manuel Rocheman
Born on July 23, 1964, in Paris, France, Manuel Rocheman is a highly talented pianist, long regarded as the “heir” to Martial Solal. He has distinguished himself through obvious virtuosity and a keen sense of harmony, establishing himself as a refined pianist, particularly at ease in a trio setting. Coming from a family of musicians, he trained at the Paris Conservatory (CNR) under Alberto Neuman, one of the few disciples of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. He discovered jazz through an Oscar Peterson record, whose influence he acknowledges, alongside that of Phineas Newborn and Martial Solal, with whom he furthered his jazz studies from 1980, having initially begun learning jazz under Michel Sardaby.
As a teenager, during a stay in New York, he met Tommy Flanagan and Jaki Byard. His ear was further enriched by listening to the trios of Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Tete Montoliu, and Chick Corea.
